Jake Humphrey, the Formula One racing presenter, joined pupils from the Sir John Cass Foundation Primary School in London last week to assist TNT Express Services to deliver some 'top gear and Christmas cheer' to kids across the UK as part of TNT's ongoing support for Wooden Spoon.
TNT has partnered with recycling experts Centriforce Products and Ecoslot, to provide toy car racing tracks made from thousands of recycled polylopes to children at 12 Spoon projects. The recycled polylopes are derived from plastic envelopes - which are used in the course of TNT's numerous contracts including those with the Department for Work and Pensions and Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs.
TNT will deliver the Ecoslot race circuits to the Spoon projects early in 2010 as part of its corporate responsibility and sustainability drive.
Jake said: “This is a great idea which will provide hours upon hours of fun. The recycling aspect is both imaginative and cost effective and helps deliver benefits for some very deserving children as well as the wider environment.”
Recycling experts Centriforce Products transform the used polylopes into plastic granules which provide the materials for Ecoslot to manufacture the racing circuits. These come complete with TNT and Wooden Spoon branded cars.
Bill Hill, the Chief Executive of Wooden Spoon, praised the ingenuity behind the racing sets when he said: “TNT is fundamental to our vision to improve the quality and prospect of life for some of the most disadvantaged children in the country.
"TNT and Wooden Spoon have helped give these pupils an appreciation of the need to preserve precious resources. This can not only help their understanding of the environment but they can also have a great deal of fun into the bargain at this exciting time of the year.”
Stuart Stobie, Divisional Managing Director of TNT Express said the racing track initiative with Spoon was a perfect illustration of the company's approach to corporate responsibility and sustainability.
“We're delighted to be able to combine our staunch support for Wooden Spoon with a fine example of how we are striving to have a positive impact on the communities in which we operate.
“The recycling aspect is both imaginative and cost effective and helps us deliver benefits for some very deserving children as well as the wider environment.”
