16 adult teams and 16 junior teams assembled on West Wittering Beach on Saturday 7th June for the Annual Beach Rugby Festival organised by Chichester Rugby Club.
Sussex Spoon became an autonomous region within Wooden Spoon in November 2005 having previously been part of the Surrey & Sussex Region. Working with the strong support of the Sussex rugby community to harness the spirit and values that exist within rugby, we aim to give disadvantaged youngsters living in Sussex a chance to live happy fulfilled lives regardless of the challenges they may face. To date, we have raised in excess of £200,000 and all over the Sussex Region there are disadvantaged children and young people enjoying the facilities we have been able to provide. It is extremely rewarding to see the excitement and delight in their faces and to hear how they have gained physically, mentally and in developing their social skills.

Review of Recent Events.
The Christmas Lunch on Brighton Pier, held on 13th December 2012, has developed into an annual event and 160 Spoon members, supporters and guests sat down in Brighton Pier's Palm Court Restaurant for Sussex Spoon's three course Fish & Chip Spectacular. David Trick provided the entertainment and over £5,000 was raised.
Step by Step Project - On 6th December 2012 supporters of Sussex Wooden Spoon, gathered the Step by Step Special Needs School in Sharpthorne, near East Grinstead, with school staff, parents and friends to see Justin Bishop, ex London Irish and Ireland rugby international and now coach at East Grinstead RFC, open the region's latest £16,000 Play Area project.
St Anthony's Project Opening - On 6th November 2012 ex England rugby International Andy Gomarsall formally opened a new Trim Trail Playground at St Anthony's Special Needs School in Chichester. He was accompanied by Sussex Spoon Chairman Bob Rogers and members of Wooden Spoon Sussex committee.
A Night at the Dogs was hosted at Hove Greyhound Stadium on 1st November 2012. Over 100 guests enjoyed a three course meal while watching the racing. A huge thank you is due to all who attended and particularly those that sponsored races and dogs. We should also thank the Stadium authorities for allowing a bucket collection at the end of the evening and those punters lucky enough to have sufficient funds left to support us. Overall the evening generated over £2,200.
Thank you to the following clubs for their help and support in putting Spoon on the map in Sussex:
Barns Green, Bognor, Brighton, Brighton University, Chichester, Crowborough, Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Hastings & Bexhill, Haywards Heath, Heathfield & Waldron, Holbrook, Horsham, Hove, Lewes, Norfolk Arms, Old Brightonians, Pulborough, Seaford, Uckfield and Worthing.
If your club can offer support to Spoon in any way then please contact Ann Holt (email@example.com)
In addition to the Clubs, Wooden Spoon is also indebted to the Sussex Society of RFU Referees and the Sussex RFU in helping our charity. The end of season Sussex Clubs Curry Night has adopted Spoon as the charity of the evening and we have also been able to raise money from Sussex home games in the County Championships.
In the coming months we are looking to work more closely with the Director of Women's rugby and the Schools section of the County RFU. We have also received support from a number of companies that have kindly either nominated Sussex Spoon as their charity or made generous donations and special thanks goes to them.
The Next Committee Meeting.
The Sussex Committee likes to get out and about and hold meetings across the county. All members and interested parties are welcome. The next Committee Meeting is on 8th May 2103.
Please contact the Chairman Bob Rogers (H 01903 785046, E firstname.lastname@example.org) or Sandy Fleming (Home 01444 414477 E email@example.com) if you want to learn more about what we do or if you wish to become more involved.
