Jason Leonard and his mates are presently battling the snow and cold on the walk across Hadrians Wall and are well on their way to raising £25,000 for Wooden Spoon.
Phil Boyle, Matt Canham, Stuart Rabey, Stuart Short, Peter Sweet and Jason Leonard started the coast to coast sponsored walk across Hadrian's Wall on the 29th March and they are attempting to complete the distance of 80 miles over four days.
But the team is not encountering the lovely spring weather they would like and after two days of cold and snow they are finding the challenge very tough. But their comerarderie and good spirits not to mention the end result is driving them on.
The funds raised will help allow the new Spoon Community Rugby Project in Hull to kick off. The Contact Club will help improve the lives of youngsters in the Hessle Road area who since the decline of the Fishing industry have limited choices in their lives. These young people's opportunities are severely limited by lack of positive activity and low aspirations. The Contact Club will give kids of all ages the chance to keep busy, fit and out of trouble through rugby and boxing. Both sports channel energy, manage aggression and teach respect.
This project can only start when it is fully funded and the Besso Hadrian's Wall Walk is well on its way to ensuring the project can begin straight after Easter.
Jason spoke to Spoon on Tuesday morning and despite the weather forecast, was raring to go. "We covered 25 miles yesterday which was on track. This morning we have all had a good hearty breakfast including a few painkillers before we set out today. The forecast not good a mixture of driving rain, blizzards and freezing temperatures, but we are still all smiling!"
