Thanks to his meteoric rise to become England Coach, the fact that Stuart Lancaster, a staunch Spoon supporter of Spoon, competing in last years Ford Ranger Great Lakeland Challenge has gone relatively unnoticed. It wasn't until flicking through last years photo's in preparation for Phil Vickery competing in it this year, that we noticed Stuart slogging around the course with his team.
After spotting him at the 2010 challenge, we tracked down Stuart to see what he thought of the Ford Ranger Great Lakeland Challenge and any advice he had for this years participants:
"The Lakeland Challenge was a great experience for me and my team. As a former player, it was one of those activities that really appealed to my competitive juices and got them flowing, giving me a chance to focus on something incredibly physically challenging. At times, it was quite tactical too, which again was perhaps something I'd missed since my playing retirement. I always enjoy something that draws the level of focus in order to achieve and it was very taxing, although huge fun too.
But don't fool yourself; you need to get yourself pretty fit for the arduous mountain climbs and then also research that tactical side- as an example transition times are absolutely key, so be prepared and understand how you can gain maximum advantage in all areas, a good driver working in between the sections is a must also!!
There was a tremendous team spirit during the Challenge, from both organisers and competitors alike, and I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone considering taking part.
Wooden Spoon should be congratulated for arranging an event that provided a great test for those competing and fun for all involved. Best of all, the money raised goes directly to the children, so everyone wins."
Stuart Lancaster, England Head Coach.
