While the rest of the UK was enjoying the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Wooden Spoon RFC were enjoying a party of their own at the biggest rugby, netball and music festival in the World - The Bournemouth 7s.
Wooden Spoon were delighted to be invited to the tournament alongside some of the biggest and best 7s sides on the national circuit, not only as a competitive rugby team, but as a charity partner to the festival that has grown exponentially in the last five years.
With both our mens and womens teams turning out in their finest Spoon regalia, donated by our kit suppliers Kukri, Wooden Spoon were entered into two devilishly difficult groups yet despite the competition both sides managed to negotiate their way into the knock out stages.
Long time followers of the fortunes of Wooden Spoon's 7s teams will have noted that of their last five tournaments our mens side have been knocked out in the quarter-final stages four times, and unfortunately the Bournemouth 7s proved to be no exception to the trend. With a strong showing in the group stage Spoon progressed through the quarter-finals where they were edged out by eventual tournament winners Apache.
By contrast, the womens team have been on scintillating form over the course of the last 18 months, consistently reaching finals and winning trophies. This season it could be said that the team hasn't exactly enjoyed the rub of the green, twice reaching finals of major tournaments only to be beaten by less than a single score by the Irish Internation team.
However, the final hoodoo continued at Bournemouth with the womens team moving efficiently through the knock out rounds were they played 2011 Bournemouth Winners 'The Moody Cows' in the final. In the dying seconds of the match Wooden Spoon were ahead by less than a score when those Cows grabbed a late match winning try with the last play of the game. Still, a fantastic performance yet again from the womens team.
Next up for Wooden Spoon RFC is the West Country 7s on June 15th, so please do come along and support Wooden Spoon.
