The venue was the Maldron Hotel in central Cardiff. Almost the perfect location, with views over the city centre, as a reported 250,000 people flocked to the city for the Grand Slam showdown.
Spoon guests were treated to an array of stars as they settled in to their curry and beverage of choice! Robert Jones (Scrum half - Wales 1986 -95 & British Lions) had the crowd in stitches with his tales about his experiences both on and off the pitch. A keen Spoon supporter, he had been at the Wooden Spoon ball the night before and joined us with his usual enthusiasm for all things Spoon and life in general.
Next up was Clive Norling. As an international referee, Clive was respected throughout the rugby world and it was plain to see that as the banter between him and players past and present flowed. (Clive is currently a member of the committee for Wooden Spoon Wales)
As if these two greats weren't enough, we also had talks from John Devereux (Welsh & GB caps in Rugby League & Welsh & British Lions caps in Rugby Union), Tommy David (British Lions & THE Llanelli team that beat NZ) and Garin Jenkins (most capped hooker for Wales 1991-2002). Although we missed the company of Treorchy Male Voice Choir, five speakers of that calibre made up for it.
A packed afternoon of rugby and speakers made for a great atmosphere, and the final results table added the icing to an exceedingly good cake!
Wooden Spoon Wales would like to thank all who gave their time so willingly to help make this Lloyds/TSB 6 Nations such a success. It was not only a success for the WRU, but for all the children and projects who will benefit from the funds raised at events like these run by Wooden Spoon committees across the UK and Ireland. Every speaker that comes in and every volunteer who does their bit, does so in the spirit of rugby, the spirit which was behind the very creation of Wooden Spoon and which still permeates to the heart of the great game we all love.
