The donation came after several years of working with Wooden Spoon. Chilterns Spoon held 2 golf days at Studley Wood, as their owner - one Richard Percival - is a Spoon member, and offered us the use of his super course. Quite unrelated, in 2005, Dr. Sally Adams played in the Rugby Clubs golf day at Henley Golf Club - picked up our literature, and phoned Barrie Mair to offer her golf year to help Spoon.
To show Dr. Adams what sort of projects Spoon has undertaken, Barrie took her to the ACE centre. Being a pharmaceutical doctor, Sally was enthralled by what she saw, and made her commitment there and then. Barrie and Sally met again together with her male captain (Nigel Lawton), and took Sandra & Mike Eland, Spoon veterans, along to explain what Spoon could do to support her fund raising. At that meeting, Nigel committed his year as well, which in total raised £15,150 - the largest amount Chilterns Spoon has ever had from a golf day of their own.
The captains graciously said that it could not have been achieved without the exceptional support Spoon put in - which should be a major selling point to all other golf clubs thinking as to where the money should go!! Perhaps the cherry on the cake came when they announced that the 2007/8 captains had made ACE their charity of the year, hence bringing continuity to Spoon's involvement in that project. Sally and Nigel will continue to support Spoon whenever the opportunity arises, and they will be bringing a team of "heroes" to the Chiltern's Golf Day in May.
