No ALT tag specifiedThe annual dinner had been a sell out since December. On the evening, some 740 guests set out to enjoy themselves and raise money for The Wooden Spoon, the charity of the four home Rugby Unions. They were joined by Gavin Hastings and Peter Brown, joint presidents of Spoon in Scotland, and several other former and current Scottish internationalists including recent captains Andy Nicol and Gordon Bulloch and Scotland squad members Dan Parks, Scott Lawson and Al Kellock.

No ALT tag specifiedJohn Beattie, who played for Scotland and the Lions but is increasingly well known for his Saturday morning hour on Radio Scotland and other programmes for the BBC, hosted the evening with his usual presence and deft touch. Phil Bennett, legendary Llannelli, Wales and Lions stand-off, returning to Scotland with the disappointment of events at Murrayfield the previous Saturday fresh in his mind, provided the early entertainment with a gentle reminder of what the game is all about. He was followed by actor Tom Urie taking the room by storm with his guitar.

Fred MacAulay had the unenviable task of following all that had gone before him but rose to the challenge in fine form.  Spoon Scottish Regional Committee has events running throughout the year organised by Representative Committees in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and the Borders-in recent years they have collectively raised more than £150,000 pa which is matched £ for £ by the National Committee, a task that is becoming increasingly difficult thanks to the generosity of 'Spoon' supporters North of the border. Monies raised in Scotland are spent locally.

The Dinner exceeded all expectations raising a staggering £90,000, reflecting the generous support for The Spoon Dinner in Glasgow and exceptional (and appropriately kind) performances by those entertaining the gathering on the night.
