The day featured a lot of fun and plenty of tried and tested fund raising activities. Each element contributed significantly to the total of £3750 raised for Spoon – this before any effect of central funding. The total raised means that Essex have now reached their target of £50k for their current project. The total included a sum of £1000 raised by the 1st XV players and management team from the “Southend RFC Changing Room” .  The following note accompanied the cheque and was read out at the lunch. :

"As one of the most successful sides to have had the privilege of representing Southend Rugby Football Club in the era of league rugby we are conscious of the fact that we are more fortunate than others.
We are also appreciative of the huge amount of support that the members and supporters of the Club have given to us throughout the season. Today presents us with the opportunity of repaying you for your support by making our own contribution to the Wooden Spoon, the Charity of British Rugby, supporting those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We attach to this letter a cheque for £1000 which is our contribution to your fundraising efforts this lunchtime. We hope you have an enjoyable lunch, raise a great deal of money and leave plenty of time to reach the touchline before kick-off. See you after the final whistle. Yours in Rugby,Chief Executive, Director of Rugby, players, coaches and support team of SRFC 1st XV"

This type of public support is certainly a first for the Essex region.  To have such support from donors of raffle prizes, auction items, the “changing room” and the referee (after the game!) certainly indicates that Wooden Spoon is alive and well in Essex.  Particular mention must be made of other Essex Clubs now supporting Spoon – Woodford RFC, Thurrock RFC, Basildon RFC, Chelmsford and Colchester RFC’s.
