2007 National Schools Sevens Tournament
The 2007 National Schools’ Sevens Tournament ended on 3 March following a week of top class rugby with over 6000 school children from the UK and overseas competing in six separate competitions.
The 2007 National Schools’ Sevens Tournament featured 50/50 split of entries from both the UK state and independent education sectors this year as well as guest teams from schools and colleges in Ukraine, Romania, China, Poland, India and Canada, which helped give the tournament an international flavour.
In 2004 Wooden Spoon saved the 65th National Schools 7’s Tournament ‘at the 11th. hour’ ensuring the continuing success of rugby’s biggest event. After three years of giving Spoon's name to the event, it was decided that Spoon could no longer provide the level of support required. However, the charity is still delighted to have an involvement with Rosslyn Park FC and the National Schools’ 7’s.
This year’s tournament started with the Juniors and Prep schools on Monday followed by the Festival (U18) for one term rugby schools on the Tuesday; the Colts (U16) on the Wednesday and finally the Girls (U18) and the Open (U18) for any schools on the Thursday and Friday. Except for the Friday where the final rounds of the Girls and Open (played at Rosslyn Park FC), all matches including the finals were played on the 26 pitches on Wimbledon Common. Over 6500 boys and girls aged 12-18 participated in the six tournaments which involved 150 Society referees and over 60 volunteers which include medical staff all of whom give up their valuable time.
During the week Spoon welcomed a large number of visitors and guests to our marquee. These included Bob Rogers (President RFU), Martin Johnson (Former England and British Lions captain), Geoff Richards (England Women’s coach), several Head Teachers whose schools are supporting the ‘Spoon Schools Initiative’, Roger Davies WS Chairman and David Allan the immediate past chairman.
