Knockavoe School and Resource Centre officially unveiled their new state-of-the-art £71,000 adventure playground on 16 November 2006. In performing the official opening, Dr Jack Kyle OBE, Honorary President of Ulster Wooden Spoon, said he was delighted to be involved in the opening of such a wonderful facility. He commented: “Knockavoe offers a fantastic range of support, education and care to all its pupils. The facilities of the new adventure playground will enhance the teaching and learning experience at the school with the whole community benefiting from the facilities that are in place.”
Wooden Spoon contributed the lions share,£41,000, of the overall cost with an additional £20,000 from the Western Education and Library Board (WELB). Contributions were also very generously received from Asda Strabane, who donated £10,000 for the wheelchair friendly roundabout. The new adventure playground accommodates senior pupils within the school. Principal, Mrs Dorothy Kinkaid, welcomed everyone to the official unveiling and thanked Dr Jack Kyle OBE, for performing the opening and the various funders for providing the necessary support. She paid tribute to the dedicated and professional teaching and support staff at the school.
Chairperson of the Board of Governors at the school, Mrs Anne Smith, thanked Wooden Spoon, WELB, Asda Strabane, All Play Agencies, The Big Lottery Fund and Raphael McGranaghan for their efforts in enhancing the facilities at the school. She commented: “The new adventure area is a great facility in which the children can build on their skills, confidence and self-esteem. The facilities will promote lifelong skills and increased participation in community life. The play area which was once an empty space will now undoubtedly bring many years of benefit and enjoyment to all pupils. It is obvious that the pupils and staff are thoroughly enjoying their new adventure area which is colourful, bright and safe as well as educational.”
