Spoon "Takes a Seat" at the Alexandra School
The Middlesex region’s first project was to assist Alexandra School, a special needs school in South Harrow, to extend the school hall and provide tiered seating.

Our promise to provide funding was the catalyst for the Local Authority to find extra cash to ensure their much-needed plan for a hall to accommodate parents and children could go ahead. The extension also meant that the school kitchen was increased in size. The school now hires a proper cook to serve meals. A recent Ofsted visit claimed that Alexandra School's food is now better than Jamie Oliver's, and this couldn't have been achieved “without the changes to the hall and kitchen, thanks to Wooden Spoon”.

Being our first successfully completed project, it will always be close to our hearts and the opening was an emotional, rewarding and memorable experience. We were inspired by the children themselves, in particular one young man who had a passion for rugby and whose hero was ‘big Lol’.

He shadowed Lawrence during the opening, and must have gone home with a terrible crick in his neck! He helped unveil the Wooden Spoon plaque and caught the ball Lawrence threw to him, finally shaking his hand at the end of the day.  The look in this young man’s eyes said it all.  This was what little boys’ dreams are made of.
