The Sunrise Centre is a new build respite unit with six residential beds on the first floor and a day unit on the ground floor. The Centre cost £1.8 million and will be well-utilised by physically and mentally disadvantaged children in the area, many of whom also turned out for the gala opening.
Dame Kelly Holmes officially unveiled the Wooden Spoon plaque and interacted with children, staff and Spooners, much to the delight of all in attendance. There was a big turnout of Kent Spooners, with over twenty Spoon ties in view. Former RFU President, Robert Horner and Robin Taylor provided rugby representation. Activities took place all day including face-painting and tours of the new facilities and entertainment from colourful clowns who kept all the guests in stitches.
The Kent region of Spoon donated £85,000 which provided the icing on the cake and funded the Water Spa, the Sensory Garden and other recreational facilities for the Sunrise Centre. The event was covered by both Radio Kent and local television stations. The event was followed by a thank you lunch for David Ives hosted by members of the Kent committee.
