120 Spooners came out to hear learn more about the battle at Rorkes Drift, from Rob Caskie, on 21 August at the Mid-Herts Golf Club. Rorkes Drift saw the award of more VC's in a single action than any other single action in history. It is a remarkable story of human courage and a triumph of human sprit. The battle lasted 9 or 10 hours and saw young British soldiers outnumbered 30 to 1 by brave Zulu warriors. A story immortalised by the film "Zulu" (1963), and one of which British people should be proud.
Rob Caskie, born in the Natal Highlands, has always had a close relationship with the Zulu peoples. He joined David Rattray, World Authority on the Zulu Wars, 5 years ago and now does the bulk of the lectures at Fugitives' Drift just down the Buffalo River from Rorke's Drift and the site of yet more action on that busiest of days, January 22nd 1879. The lecture was part of Rob's 4th lecture tour in the UK, and the interesting evening earned the Hertfordshire region £2000.
