| After a month’s great weather, the course looked picture perfect and was set up to encourage high scoring. First out of the blocks was Truro RFC who posted an imposing score of 89 before retiring to the bar to replenish some of the fluids lost on a hot and humid day. The absence of the club’s dietician perhaps explained why the boys refueled on beer and wine rather than isotonic drinks but, given their points total, the mistake was an understandable one!
Several other teams cracked 80 but as the competitive part of the day drew to a close it became clear that the pacesetters from Truro, seen in the photo above, were not going to be caught. They advance to represent Cornwall in the national event at Belton Woods, Lincolnshire in September, and we wish them luck. After an excellent dinner, the evening’s entertainment was provided by Spoon stalwart Jerry Thomas who regaled the teams with stories of his time propping for Gloucester and drinking cider.
Thanks are due to the Spoon’s national sponsors and the day’s hosts Graham and Claire Bond.
