On Sunday 23rd April, we attended (for the second year running) the Dorking RFC Mini Rugby Festival with over 2,000 boys taking part in one of the biggest youth festivals in the South East. Despite the worst attempts of the weather (well, kids like getting muddy, don’t they!), a hugely successful day was crowned by Josh Lewsey presenting the medals. We ran an assault course for the kids which was very popular and four Stradbrooke girls ran the gauntlet with collecting buckets and membership forms during the afternoon – as you will see from the picture, they too were hugely popular and raised a magnificent sum of money!
On the following Sunday, we were delighted to be invited to attend the Guildford RFC Family Day – a great deal of fun and fellowship in which Spoon were ably supported again by the team from Stradbrooke. A team representing Spoon were victorious by 33 points to 7 and the second picture shows that Surrey committee members have cracked the mystery of putting the cabana back into the carrying bag!! From both of the above days we have made a lot of friends in the Rugby Clubs participating and raised well over £2,000.
Our next venture is to help Croydon RFC celebrate their 50th anniversary in September. An Under 19 Tournament will be played on that day and The Royal Bank of Scotland have kindly agreed to sponsor a luncheon at the club when all the Chairmen and Presidents of the Surrey Rugby Clubs involved will be invited to come and support Croydon RFC’s celebrations and learn about Wooden Spoon at the same time.
