After a moving speech from the ex Old Actonian Captain, John Hambly, who is a sufferer of MS, the two teams engaged in battle for the Samson Trophy. In front of a crowd of nearly 400 people the sides engaged in a hugely entertaining game witnessing some “old style" ball skills with Zinzan and Jason showing that they haven’t lost their power or pace. Roared on by a massive support from the McGee Demolition Company (based in Alperton) every breath was exerted by both sides and the St. Johns Ambulance team worked double time to keep up with the stream of injuries.
Eventually The McGee All Stars took the game with a 35-29 victory to become the first holders of The Samson Trophy which is intended to be played annually in aid of different local charities.
The night ended with the cup being handed to winning captain Brian McGee by John Hambly, followed by an auction of sporting memorabilia kindly donated by Brian McGee and The Belvedere Restaurant (based at Hanger Lane). The auction which raised over £3,500 thanks to the bully boy tactics of McGee Director, David Bannon.
Thanks to the organisation for their steward and ground staff, Old Actonians had record bar sales and the events team thank them for their efforts. The organiser, sponsors and charities would like to give a rousing cheer to Jason Leonard and Zinzan Brooke who made it such a memorable day by being so willing to play in the game, sign so many shirts and make so many grown men have stories to tell their grand children.
