The opening took place on a windy Wednesday with guests being welcomed by a Trustee of Middleton Park, Councillor Bernard Atha.

After a few words about Spoon from Richard Smith, Yorkshire Spoon Chairman, it was the John and Iain show! Honorary Yorkshire President, John Bentley, entertained the assembled gathering in his own inimitable style before he and Iain Balshaw, of Leeds Tykes and England, cut the ribbon to the magnificent new covered arena to which Wooden Spoon contributed £35,000.

All the guests then enjoyed seeing 10 of the disadvantaged children that use the Centre ride around the arena on ponies in fancy dress. John and Iain had the unenviable task of deciding on the overall winner. In true Spoon style all 10 riders were winners and all received a rosette from the two rugby celebrities. Afterwards all the guests enjoyed the hospitality of the centre which is brilliantly managed by Bev Backhouse.
