Alongside Durham, The Nortumberland Region of WOoden Spoon covers the whole of the North East of England. Under the stewardship of Chairman, Danny Hodgeson and ably assisted by Secretary, Rana Cuthbertson and a small Committee the Northumberland Committee have quietly been going about their business but making great inroads and changing lives across the whole of the Region.
Up until 2004 the Regional Committee were dedicating all the fundraising to the national project, the Percy Hedley Foundation. The fantastic new indoor sports centre dedicated to children and young people with physical disabilities and now the outstanding centre of excellence for English disabled athletes, was opened last year to much acclaim and the Region’s focus has moved on to new projects.
The Committee has gained two new members recently and all nine members live in different areas of the County from as far a field as Newcastle and Berwick; meetings are usually held half way between everyone in Alnwick! The injection of new members brings with it new ideas and next year’s fundriasing is hoping to focus a lot more on family oriented activities to extend the appeal of Spoon events.

One of the original strategies for the Committee was to support a project in each of the five rugby playing areas of the county. The latest project certainly fulfils that. Spoon Council approved at the end of last year the provision of £3,000 each to 15 rugby clubs to enable them to build new wheelchair facilities at the clubs. Clubs applied to receive this funding and all have agreed that at the opening of the new facilities over the next eighteen months, they dedicate the day to fundraising for Spoon. It could easily result in the projects being self funding, a great idea!
In addition, the Region is looking for the approval of three other projects at schools in Berwick, Morpeth and North Shields to be completed over the next three years that would then fulfil the objective of funding projects across the whole region - a phenomenal achievement considering the square miles!
With ideas like this Northumberland Region will have no problem funding their next three projects and they look forward to choosing specific projects and working in areas of particular need in the Region.
