| The Merseyside Committee was formed in 2001 and have recently undergone a reorganisation. The new Committee is made up of enthusiastic individuals who work in different fields but whom collectively really want to make a difference.
Heading up the Committee is long time supporter of Spoon, Anselm Gilby. Anselm was voted into the role in January after previously holding the position of Treasurer. Anselm originally joined Wooden Spoon and the Committee because of his close connection with Rugby since school, playing club rugby for Liverpool and Waterloo RUFC. He is good friends with Tony Richards, the Deputy Chief Executive of Wooden Spoon.
For the last few years, Phil Cooper stood in as the acting Chairman, following Martin Rogers and he has now been superseded by Anselm. Phil is still keen to be involved with Spoon having seen at first hand both the benefits and happiness that Spoon’s generosity brings and the enthusiasm, inventiveness and integrity of everybody involved with the Charity, both regionally and nationally.
Helen, Phil’s wife, is a former physiotherapist who swapped massaging men's thighs to work with a team involved in the design and build of two new hospitals in the area. Along with Sharon Farley, they add the ‘woman’s touch’ when organising fundraising events.
Ian Robinson has been the team is Ade Barry and Pat Barry who bring great enthusiasm, fundraising and event management skills to the table. Eddie Bentley an Independent Business Consultant, eloquently summed it up for the Committee, “The collective will of sportsmen and women can make a real difference, especially for children, whose hopes and dreams can often be turned into reality. Wooden Spoon deserves the support of everyone who supports rugby.”
The Honorary President, Mike Slemen is also fully involved in the Committee meetings. Mike was onboard from the start and invited to be President because of his rugby connections in Merseyside, not to mention the fact that he used to play against Deputy CEO, Tony Richards and taught new Chairman, Anselm.
