| 10 April 2006 - The Calvert Trust on the edge of Exmoor laid out the red carpet to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal who enjoyed a tour of the Centre, opened a new attraction, chatted to staff and visitors and watched climbing, archery and horse riding displays. The highlight of the visit on Monday April 10th was the official opening of the Centre's new outdoor riding arena, which has been funded by the Devon section of Wooden Spoon.
Her Royal Highness, herself a keen horsewoman and the Patron of Wooden Spoon, unveiled a plaque to officially open the new arena. The Princess Royal watched various demonstrations and displays that highlighted the outstanding work of the Calvert Trust Exmoor which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. She met a number of people involved with the Trust, including the Chairman of Trustees, Sir Michael Knight, the Centre Director Chris Slater, the Chairman of the Devon Section of the Wooden Spoon Bruce Priday, North Devon District Councillor, Joe Tucker and the Chairman of Kentisbury Parish Council, Jim Pyle.
The Trust, based at Wistlandpound in North Devon, specialises in outdoor activity holidays for people with disabilities and its ethos is 'challenging disability through outdoor adventure.' Activities offered include canoeing, kayaking, swimming, climbing, riding, orienteering and archery - all supervised by well qualified instructors. Accommodation is fully accessible and designed for wheelchair users and specialist equipment such as electric beds and hoists are available. The Centre has over 2,500 users every year and a further 300 day users from the local community.
Centre Director Chris Slater said: "We are delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal to Calvert Trust, Exmoor and it will be a wonderful opportunity for The Princess Royal to see what we achieve here at Wistlandpound. We are extremely honoured that Her Royal Highness will be able to open this fantastic new facility, generously donated by Wooden Spoon and we are extremely grateful for all the support that Wooden Spoon have given to the Centre."
Devon Spoon Chairman Bruce Priday said: "We were delighted to assist the Calvert Trust Exmoor with this very worthwhile facility and we trust it will bring a great deal of enjoyment to so many children. I cannot praise my committee and members enough for their outstanding work. It is also testament to those people and businesses in Devon who support and believe in our work."
On the Same Day.....the Wooden Spoon Café at the Knight Club for disadvantaged youth in Exeter has been fitted out by the Devon region of Wooden Spoon with the support of Armada Finance.
The new youth café will be an important feature at Exeter's Sure Start community project at Pendragon House in Beacon Lane, Beacon Heath, and was officially opened on Monday 10 April by one of the Country's most idolised and respected rugby players, Jason Leonard OBE. Wooden Spoon Devon contributed £40,000 to the Sure Start facility as well as provided the kitchen in the Knight Club. Jason, who has played for Saracens, Harlequins, Barbarians, England and the British Lions as well as being World Cup Winner in 2003, mixed with young people in the Knight Club and children and their mothers at the Sure Start centre before unveiling a plaque to open the new Wooden Spoon café which has been provided by the Devon Region of Wooden Spoon.
Sure Start Exeter is a community project in Whipton and Beacon Heath funded by central government to support the play, learning and health of children under 5 and their families. Programme Manager Christine Cottle explained: "Sure Start is about everyone working in partnership including parents, carers, statutory, voluntary and independent organisations for the benefit of the local community."
Devon Spoon Chairman Bruce Priday said: "We are delighted to assist Sure Start Exeter with this very worthwhile facility and we trust it will increase the aspirations of the families in the area we also hope to bring much enjoyment to many young people in the area also via The Knight Club facility that has a long history of providing a focus for social inclusion and support."
