26 teams set off for the entertaining day as usual lively with banter among the teams – all in support of the Team Devon Wooden Spoon. The golf day was held in conjunction with the Torquay Golf Club’s ‘Captain’s Charity Day’ and was hosted by Mike Boxall, who kindly nominated the Wooden Spoon as his chosen charity in his Captaincy year. Teams of four played to Stableford rules with the best two scores to count.
Once all the teams had arrived back to the club house, the scores were counted – it was a very close run competition as there were only 6 points between the top 3 teams. Taking first place to win the overall competition was Thompson Jenner, with 89 points; in second place was Pardners (Rok), with 84 points and in third place was Rougemount Thistle, with 83 points. The Thompson Jenner players were the first winning team to be presented with the new Malcolm Baker Golf Trophy, dedicated to the memory of our dear Team Devon Secretary Malcolm Baker who passed away in 2007. In addition to this close run competition, players were also tested with a ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ competition. The winning players were:
• Nearest the Pin – Keith Biggs
• Longest Drive (sponsored by Clydesdale Bank) – Andrew Richards.
During the presentation dinner, players were treated to entertainment by the comedian Carl Schofield - thank you Carl for an entertaining show. Help and support was also provided in a variety of forms by many, thanks to all for their continued support and commitment to the fundraising events organised by Team Devon Wooden Spoon. Various prizes were provided by, amongst others, HSBC, Abbey, Taverley TBS Golf, David Robinson, Jack In The Green and Avilton Foods.
