The team comprised many new faces recruited from teams who have not previously been involved in the side, including players from Henley and Loughborough University.
Captained by England player, Kat Merchant and coached by England Flanker, Gemma Sharples the team came together for the tournament to play for Spoons.
Over the weekend the girls played a total of 10 matches building a team performance that was cohesive and impactful enough to defeat the Irish Vixens in the Sunday final.
The event is split over two days with a final on both Saturday and Sunday; Saturday’s results providing the seeding for Sunday’s matches. On the Saturday the Spoon team had emphatic victories over the Average Joe’s, City Girls, Longford Park Rangers and Richie’s Bitches before meeting the Irish Vixens in the final, comprising many of the national Irish Fifteen a-side team.
It was the first of the two teams’ exchanges and Spoon on this occasion came out second. However, this only provided the incentive that the players needed to ensure they reached Sunday’s final for a rematch.
The first half saw three unanswered tries from the Spoons as they too the game to the Irish. Nine games had helped shape the defensive play and sharpen the attacking moves to produce simple but effective scores.

Despite a defiant Irish Team scoring a try in the opening minutes of the second half, Spoon added to their try count with more points and a crucial conversion and with only minutes on the clock were able to keep possession. A last minute try by the Irish was not enough to win the game and Spoon ran out 22-12 winners, regaining the trophy and making them champions for the third successive year.
The Spoon team comprised many youngsters for whom this was their first major sevens tournament and their dedication, teamwork and quick learning was the backbone of this success. Spoon would like to thank everyone for their time, energy and huge enthusiasm. It was a pleasure for Spoon to work with the players who not only won the Euro 2000 prize money, but also accumulated Euro 835 through the selling of wristbands to the rugby community. Thank you.
