On Monday, 26th January 2009, Team Devon Wooden Spoon’s Plymouth group held its very popular Sports Quiz in the Sergeants Mess at Stonehouse Royal Marine Barracks, Plymouth. Just three days later, on the 29th a second quiz was held the Rougemont Hotel in Exeter. At the Plymout Quiz, now in its seventh year, the question master David (Fitz) Fitzgerald, tested the sports knowledge of the 18 teams who took part in the event. With the top three 2008 teams, Francis Clark; Stratton Creber Commercial; and Universally Challenged returning to defend their titles the evening proved to be full of drama and excitement. Fitz, presented the 2009 winners, ‘The Hackers’; ‘Simple Minds’; and ‘JB used to be a BFF’ with their prizes, which for the fifth year have been sponsored by Wolferstans Solicitors. After so much racking of brains, the teams enjoyed a curry and a short auction. Team Devon Wooden Spoon committee member, Kevin Norris, said:“ We owe a huge thank you to Stonehouse Barracks, the Mess staff, David Fitzgerald, our prize sponsors, Wolferstans and of course all the teams who supported the event and raised over £1,000. Without them it would not be possible to raise funds to support children and young adults who are disadvantaged, physically, mentally or socially.
Then, not content with hosting just one great quiz, on Thursday, 29th January 2009, Team Devon Wooden Spoon held its very popular ‘Question of Spoon’ Quiz at The Rougemont Hotel, Exeter. Now in its 8th year, the quiz master, Exeter Chiefs player, Chris (Bentos) Bentley tested the knowledge of the 25 teams who took part in the event. With the 2008 winning team Northcott Beaton returning to defend their title the evening was set to be full of drama and excitement. While limbering up for the mental effort which lay before them, teams enjoyed a buffet and relived past successes and near misses. Towards the end of the evening teams were running neck and neck, listening intently to each question in the hope that another point would see them triumph and pip the others to the post.
In the end the 2009 triumphant winners were: ‘Simple Egg Heads’ (Simpkins Edwards); followed by Financial & Taxation Consultants in second place; and Thomas Westcott, in third. Simple Egg Heads were presented with the Winner’s Trophy and Magnums of champagne by Wooden Spoon Committee Member, Trudy Priday. Each team member of the second and third placed teams received a bottle of wine to help them celebrate their success. Team Devon Wooden Spoon Chairman, Bruce Priday said: “We owe a huge thank you to The Rougemont Hotel, Chris Bentley our Quiz Master, Tim Hill our Question Master, our prize sponsors, and of course all the teams and our Silver Spoon sponsors who have supported the event. Without them it would not be possible to raise funds to support children and young adults who are disadvantaged, physically, mentally or socially. “I congratulate the winning teams and we look forward to seeing them back in 2010.”
Team Devon Wooden Spoon has raised over £750,000 and supported 16 projects in Devon since it was established in 2000.
