Tom Voyce, the London Wasps and England winger “did the honours” at Chailey Heritage School (http://www.chaileyheritage.e-sussex.sch.uk/).where the Sussex Committee funded a specially adapted kitchen in the Living Skills Area. Chailey Heritage School is renowned for the work it does in teaching children with severe physical disabilities. The Living Skills Area is its most recent addition and this combines education for senior pupils with preparing the children for the day when they eventually leave school.
The Living Skills area is what it says and obviously the kitchen, which has been funded by Sussex Region, is fundamentally important in helping give the children a degree of independence.
The facilities are proving to be a great success as cakes (delicious!) made in the kitchen were served at lunchtime and Tom Voyce was presented with a jar of marmalade made by the children. The official opening party obviously contained representatives of the Sussex Committee and Chailey Heritage School but the numbers were swelled by a number of specially invited guests.
These included representatives of nearby Haywards Heath and East Grinstead rugby clubs who have been great supporters of Spoon as well as the patrons at the Griffin pub in Fletching who have kindly provided auction prizes for the Regional Golf Day.
Finally, we were delighted to be joined by the Daily Telegraph’s (and Sussex’s own) rugby correspondent Mick Cleary who talked to Tom about his career and aspirations after the formal proceedings had concluded. The result was published in Wednesday’s Daily Telegraph giving great publicity to Wooden Spoon and highlighting how fortunate the charity is to have Tom Voyce as an Ambassador.
