As always the school made everyone feel very welcome with their excellent hospitality both pre and post match. An appreciative crowd were treated to a tremendous game of running rugby from both teams, but the SpoonAAs were bigger, faster and stronger than their hosts and produced a steady flow of tries from both backs and forwards. RFU panel referee Chris Sharp controlled the game with very little whistle and a great vision for advantage. Gigg didn’t have any ball at all for the first five minutes and heroically defended their line against waive after waive of attacking rugby. SpoonAAs first try came from prop forward Horrocks who powered over near to the corner, Dan Eddie missing a difficult kick in the swirling wind.

This prompted the visitors into action with superb tries coming from Jack Smales a second from the athletic Horrocks and a try from Chris Johnson, Dan Eddie adding a couple of conversions taking the half time score to 24-7.

In the second half the crowd were treated with some mesmeric running from SpoonAAs left wing Jack Smales whose pace would have brought an even more premature end to the game had he so wished. Instead he left the scoring to his team mates allowing full back and senior player Jon Eagle in for his first try of the season, with further tries from Ashcroft, Gilbert, Johnson and two more conversions sealing the Old Giggleswickians fate. Referee Sharp looked at the dark clouds rolling in over the hills and decided to blow his whistle early with the final score line at 48-7.

Selecting the Kukri Man of the Match award wasn’t easy, for Giggleswick forward David Muckalt and centre Tom Davison could both lay a claim, but in the end it was decided that the guile, tackling, vision and slight of hand from SpoonA-As full back Jon Eagle, who didn’t kick the ball all afternoon, earned him the accolade.
