Cool Recovery was started two years ago as an off shoot of COOL (carers one-to-one) which was established in 1999. It provides information, volunteering opportunities, and a range of activities for carers and people affected by mental health issues providing much needed support for them, their families and friends. They offer a unique, friendly and easy accessible resource and believe that recovery and change are possible for everyone. Funded by Team North Devon for £50,000 the conservatory project has been a great success and has provided a perfect area for the introduction of additional activities for carers and people affected by mental health issues.
Martin Smith, Cool Recovery Manager said: “ We are extremely grateful for the huge support Team Devon has given us, in particular we would like to thank its Chairman, Bruce Priday and his team for their belief in our project. The conservatory is in constant use and a real cafe culture has developed among the young people we support. “The additional space has allowed us to introduce extra activities which provide emotional support in a friendly and relaxing environment. Thank you Wooden Spoon.”
As well as holding therapy session and running family group activities in the conservatory, it has sparked the imagination of the young carers who visit Cool. Together the young carers have held several events including a ‘Posh Evening’ when they put on their posh clothes and enjoyed a three course dinner ... ..and they are planning more events! The opening also brought an added treat for the young carers, the cutting of a special cake! They all joined David Trick and Jason Leonard to cut a cake (as seen above left) that depicted a rugby scrum! It had been presented to Team Devon by Peter Scott, a founder of Wooden Spoon, and his wife Sheila during a North Devon Event on Friday, 26 September. The cake was a big hit and enjoyed by all.
