England Legends applaud the Irish Legends after the game at RichmondOn Friday 14th March guests descended upon the Lensbury Club in Teddington for a Legends Dinner. Players from the 1983 game that initiated the birth of Spoon helped the evening go with a swing with some candid responses to some interesting questions devised by the other attendees. Also in attendance were players forming the England Legends and the Irish Legends teams who replicated the 1983 fixture with a wonderful game on Saturday morning at the Richmond Athletic Ground. Although none of the players from the 1983 game donned their boots, the teams were full of former internationals from more recent years. They produced a great game full of style and skill. The final result didn’t quite follow history with the England Legends running out victors. A full report of the game and those that participated can be read by clicking here.

The founders outside Motcombs Restaurant 2008Whilst the action was taking place on the pitch a host of ex-international players joined Wooden Spoon at Motcombs Restaurant, Pimlico. Motcombs is the stomping ground of the founders and every year the Irish play their Six Nations fixture in England, friends gather for a brunch at the restaurant before heading to the ground. It was in Motcombs that the idea of the very first Spoon event was mooted and the idea of forming a charity was developed. The founding members of Wooden Spoon were reunited at the restaurant with many old friends and players from the 1983 game, including England Winger, David Trick and Irish Full back, Hugo MacNeil.

Spoon is celebrating its quarter century milestone over the next two years. The first year from March 2008 to March 2009 will be know as the ‘Founders’ Year’ and will be celebrating the formation of the Charity and the past 25 years. From March 2009 to March 2010 Spoon will be celebrating its future - the next 25 years and laying foundations for the next phase in the Charity’s history. There is a natural theme for the two years of celebrations - 25. Spoon’s target is to raise £2.5million over the two year period, to create 25 new projects per year, to fund and complete 25 projects, to change the lives of another 250,000 children, to host over 250 fundraising events, increase membership to 25,000 and bring on board 25 new sponsors. During 2008 we will also be announcing several new initiatives and this will be done on the 25th of every month through an Emagazine.
