The Rutherford School is an independent, special school for Croydon and Sutton’s most profoundly disabled children, aged between two and twelve. It was chosen as one of the latest project for the Surrey region of Wooden Spoon. The new building, a £1.2 million project, will provide modern and improved facilities, resources and access - including four new purpose-built classrooms and a therapy room - for the profoundly disabled pupils of Rutherford School. It was part-funded with a £24,000 grant by Wooden Spoon. It is supported by a number of other charitable trusts, companies, local organisations and individuals, with a substantial amount coming from the Garwood Foundation.
David Jackson, the Regional Chairman of Wooden Spoon’s Surrey branch said ‘We were particularly drawn to this project as not only is the school creating a new facility but through our support it will enable us to make a positive difference to the quality of life and education of its pupils. Our members are so proud to have helped such an excellent cause.’ Dr Mike Bee, Rutherford School’s Head Teacher added 'We are so delighted with the fantastic support from so many generous supporters. Everyone is very excited that the Princess came to open this wonderful building for us – the pupils and staff all met her and showed off the new facilities.’
