| Three hundred people enjoyed a 4-course meal and a brilliant performance by Tenors Incognito, which was followed by a very entertaining auction led by ex-England rugby player Jeff Probyn. David Passmore, of BBC Points West fame, was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and the band which led the dancing until the small hours was the very popular 10-piece soul band Area52.
The fundraising for Wooden Spoon was excellent and on the night a brilliant £3,651 was raised from the tickets, auction and a raffle. The money will be spent in Somerset to support disadvantaged children and young people. Current projects include a Children’s Centre in Norton Fitzwarren and an all-weather pitch at Westhaven School in Weston-super-Mare.
Auction lots included a signed, framed and certified Barbarians Rugby Shirt, a weekend’s use of a brand new ‘‘Mercedes CLS 320’’ kindly donated by Thrifty Car and Van Rental, dinner for four at Pitminster’s illustrious local PH, The Queen’s Arms, a weekend’s use of a “Triumph Rocket” motorbike kindly donated by Total Triumph of Taunton, a weekend for two at The Castle Hotel, Taunton, an original abstract painting “Atlantis”, acrylic on board, kindly donated by the artist David Alexander, The Laws of Rugby Football, limited edition (number 100 of 500 worldwide) published by the Museum of Rugby at Twickenham, and a table for ten at Wooden Spoon’s Jungle Fever Ball in November 2007.
The Somerset Committee wholeheartedly thanks all those who attended the ball and everyone who gave their time and help in organising or contributing to the event.
