The Wooden Spoon Discovery Garden is attached to the Cleveland Unit within the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough. Jamie Noon, of Newcastle Falcons and England centre (37 caps), kindly gave up his time to come and be part of the celebrations on the day.
Jamie has two very young children both under five and so appreciated the educational service provided by the Cleveland Unit to physically or mentally disadvantaged children under five. The Unit's Headteacher, Liz Pickard works with a variety of different agencies in providing educational support for up to two terms for each child who stays at the hospital so that they do not fall behind in their schooling whilst receiving life-saving medical care.
Ms. Pickard spoke of her gratitude for the £25,000 donation from Spoon, which contributed one-third of the overall cost of £75,000 for the sensory garden.
Both Philip Blunden, the retiring Projects Coordinator for Spoon, and Richard Smith, chair of Yorkshire Spoon, were on hand to witness the spectacle of the children demonstrating how much they appreciated the new play area by getting straight to play!
