On a very wet summer it stayed dry just long enough for Dame Tanni to do the honours after an introduction by the school head. Dame Tanni who has won 11 Gold Medals as a wheelchair athlete and used to train on the road outside the school until her recent retirement as she lives just 300 metres from the school. The dynamic Headteacher of the school, Gill Naylor, thanked Spoon for their fundraising efforts. The school was established in the 1970's and caters for children with special needs aged between 4 and 19. The school has 124 pupils and was one of the first schools to cater for children with profound and multiple disabilities alongside children with lesser disabilities.
All of the children and teachers were present on the school’s playing field for the formal opening. The outdoor play facilities replaced the original facilities that had long fallen into disrepair. Dame Tanni spent time with the children and staff before heading back home in her wheelchair (cross-country)! The school kindly provided Dame Tanni and other guests, including Jeremy Horsell, Mike Coughlan and Richard Smith from Wooden Spoon, with refreshments after the opening. The opening was extremely enjoyable and Spoon are extremely grateful to Dame Tanni for giving up her time given that she is working 72 hour weeks at present!
