The key to launching a new event in a hitherto Spoon-free city was a memorable speaker and an entertaining MC. The choice of Martin Bayfield was an obvious one as anyone who has heard him speak will testify; David Trick was suggested by Tony Richards given his “hand” in the birth of Wooden Spoon. In addition Tony was booked to give his well rehearsed and much appreciated “Spoon message”. The capacity of the banqueting / conference room at The Royal York Hotel was 230 plus a Top Table and we managed to fill it without too much bother.
Carter Jonas were generous in sponsoring the event as a whole whilst we also had the support of Dickinson Dees for our programme and the drinks reception had the backing of that great Spoon supporter, Black Sheep Brewery. The dinner, auction (superbly run by Martin Bayfield) and raffle raised around £15,000 for Wooden Spoon – not bad for a first event in York. The date is already fixed for next year’s event at the same venue – Thursday 24th March 2008.
