| It promised to be a memorable assembly on Monday 14 May 2007 when The Kings of Wessex Sixth Form are together for the last time. The Senior Team handed over Charities Week cheques worth over £14,000 to representatives from their nominated three charities: Somerset Wooden Spoon, The National Council for Palliative Care and Link Community Development.
A suitable contender for Charities Week’s exciting exploits, Gareth Chilcott – nicknamed Cooch – favourite ex-Bath England and British Lions rugby player, earning 14 caps for England, also TV rugby commentator, even pantomime actor and sometimes author received the cheque as Honorary President of Somerset Wooden Spoon. The Kings of Wessex's contribution of just over £3000 to Spoon will be spent on two projects supporting disadvantaged children in Somerset: one at Westhaven School in Weston, to which Spoon has pledged £30,000 and the second, Children's Centres in Taunton, to which £40,000 has been pledged.
As one of rugby’s true characters staff and students are greatly looking forward to Cooch scoring with some of his amazingly funny rugby anecdotes. Out on the field, he is remembered in full attack, with his famed headband and trademark moustache, coupled with his fearsome visage, never calculated to put his opponents at ease.
